Description and Requirements

The Mechanical Engineer works cooperatively within a professional product cost analysis team, responsible for evaluating Lenovo and competitor’s products, to identify and influence costs and product design. 

This role will specifically focus on early development stage products, materials, and projects, driving for the best options for cost, quality, environmental, performance and image for Lenovo’s brand. This role provides leadership and independent influence into the product, development, and procurement teams to achieve leading cost competitiveness on Lenovo products.

In this role, the candidate will monitor and understand product lines and roadmaps for Lenovo and competitors’ products.  They will also provide technical leadership within a highly skilled engineering team, maintaining expertise in the following related areas of product competitiveness and cost, specifically but not limited to, New Product Budget Setting, Competitor Analysis Reports, Design to Cost, Competitor Analysis & Selection, Cost Modeling, “What if” Analysis, Should Cost Estimates, Raw & Sustainable/Recycled Material Cost evaluation, Tooling Cost, Manufacturing Cost.

This is a highly visible position within the Lenovo organization with regular executive interaction.  You will be working with colleagues who reside in Morrisville, NC US, Shenzhen, China, and Beijing, China in addition to other parts of Lenovo’s global ecosystem, both internal and external.

Basic Requirements:

• Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

• Minimum Experience: 5 years

• PC or related industry experience

• Familiar with PC mechanical development; materials, tooling, manufacturing process, thermal

• Ability and willingness to be involved in all details of team responsibilities, including supplier negotiation, executive presentations, ordering and management of equipment, and negotiations with stakeholders.

• Ability to plan projects, manage equipment availability, implement, and improve processes, coordinate, report and communicate at all levels within and outside the organization.

• Interpersonal skills. Influencer. Experienced in global, cross-functional negotiation.

• Practical knowledge of agile-based program management, tools, and methodologies

• Experience working in a global company

• Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.

• Excellent skills in standard Microsoft Office products, particularly PowerPoint and Excel

• Travel as necessary – about 20%, under normal conditions

• Confidence

Preferred requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field

• Experience with ESG and Sustainability practices

• Extensive knowledge of PC industry, architecture, technology trends, product design and manufacturing

• Knowledge or passion for Environmental, Social and Governance in product development.

• Experienced in building partnerships with suppliers of sustainable materials and technology partners for sourcing and cost analysis.

• Strong network or experience working with organizations (suppliers, recyclers, etc) involved with sustainable materials (recycled plastic, recycled metal) in China or other markets

• Comfortable with autonomy within a small team

• Cost Engineering and Cost Management experience

• Knowledge of tooling development, manufacturing processes, materials, material selection, sustainability, environmental impacts

• Strong experience with agile tools, preferably Jira

• Skilled in Microsoft Excel or other advanced data analysis tools and statistical methods

• Fluency in Chinese is an asset, but not required.
