Description and Requirements
Lenovo is expanding its Cloud DevOps team and looking to hire a Director of Engineering, Cloud Operations, and Infrastructure. This role would be a second-line management role responsible for three groups, with the respective managers. It will own all aspects of cloud infrastructure and platform, including roadmap and architecture for the three teams: CloudOps, SRE, and Platform Engineering. The Cloud Engineering team builds the platform upon which our internal applications and SaaS solutions are hosted/communicate. The Cloud Operations and Infrastructure team is responsible for DevOps processes, including shared services deployment, observability, automation, overall infrastructure orchestration, CI/CD tooling, DevSecOps pipeline, data pipeline, site reliability, and op-ex planning and execution.
What you would be doing…
- In this role, you’ll be managing DevOps & Engineering teams responsible for continuous integration and deployment pipeline, cloud infrastructure for the platform and services, uptime SLAs, automation of security tools (left shift), and strategic hiring. You’ll be supported by respective engineering managers & leads, project managers, and scrum masters – Lenovo FTEs and consultants.
- Set the Cloud and Infrastructure team’s long-term technical direction and strategy and contribute to the broader Engineering organization processes. Champion reliability, performance, and scale of core infrastructure services (AWS, Azure) with a focus on metrics collection, and analysis for data-driven decision-making.
- You’ll own the overall cloud and infrastructure budgets, and resource planning to meet Cloud and Software team’s objectives. You’ll also own the operational expense planning and execution, focused on building financial models in partnership with Engineering Leadership and Finance Ops teams.
- Collaborate with business and engineering stakeholders to support the design and development of the Cloud and Software team’s Cloud Infrastructure roadmap.
- Co-develop infrastructure and engineering standards, documentation, processes, and procedures with cloud and backend engineers and help establish, implement, and analyze infrastructure-wide SLOs, KPIs, and metrics.
- Infuse site reliability and security into all areas of Lenovo cloud infrastructure; understand modern software security and secure software systems with cloud-based infrastructure thus establishing a stable, reliable secure, and high-performing cloud platform.
- As Engineering Leader and Manager-of-Managers, you will empower our teams to continuously improve their processes and culture and cultivate the happiness and development of our engineers especially help grow and mentor Engineering Managers and individual contributors in your org.
- Ensure your team consistently makes and meets commitments to deliver value by actively removing roadblocks for your team and supporting dependent teams.
MINIMUM QUALIFICAITONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, equivalent training, or work experience.
- 12 years of experience in a software engineering environment, 6+ years of engineering management experience in building and scaling a global infrastructure team operating high-scale cloud infrastructure
- Prior DevOps or Cloud Engineering management experience of 10+ people team is required, preference would be for the prior manager-of-manager experience of at least 3 years.
- Demonstrable experience leading global DevOps team, managing offshore squads & 3rd party vendor teams, experience building cloud infrastructure to include network, security, container, and Identity and access management mechanisms and structures.
- Solid technical background and large-scale practical experience with infrastructure platform container frameworks (Kubernetes), production database engine familiarity, and metrics tooling (Prometheus, Grafana).
- Proven track record of executing customer-facing infrastructure initiatives across multiple diverse product teams. Provide resource management to major initiatives by forecasting resource demands with functional areas, coordinating the staffing of infrastructure
- Experience building and maintaining a 3-tier infrastructure support model, including development, site reliability, and front-line incident management functions in a chain of continuous improvement.
- The ability to synthesize all inputs from stakeholder engineering teams and develop a crisp long-term infrastructure roadmap, with the ability to adjust and realign at the speed of the business.
- Prior experience in IC or Manager role managing Azure, AWS, AliCloud, or distributed VMware environments; demonstrating knowledge of one container technology such as Docker, knowledge of design and implementation with code management toolings such as GitHub / GitLab as well as CI/CD pipeline tooling Jenkins, Jenkins X, Bamboo, and deployments.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 15 years of experience in a software engineering environment, 10+ years of progressive engineering management experience in building and scaling a global infrastructure team operating high-scale cloud infrastructure
- Prior DevOps or Cloud Engineering management experience of 25+ people team is required, preference would be for the prior manager-of-manager experience of at least 5 years.
- Proven track record of executing customer-facing infrastructure initiatives across multiple diverse product teams. Provide resource management to major initiatives by forecasting resource demands with functional areas, coordinating the staffing of infrastructure programs/projects with managers, and providing work direction and coaching.
- Demonstrable leadership, influencing, and communication skills, as well as the ability to drive continuous performance improvements with the stakeholders, vendors, and technology subject matter specialists.
